1912

There were many different events going on in the world in 1912, but they were pushed to the side with the tragic news of the Titanic’s sinking on her maiden voyage.  Here are just a few things that happened during the year of 1912.

January 1912:

1st - Sun Yat-sen forms Chinese Republic; The Republic of China is established.
6th - New Mexico becomes 47th state

February 1912:
14th  - Arizona was admitted to the Union as the 48th state
26th- Coal miners’ strike in England

March 1912:
1st  - Isabella Goodwin, 1st US woman detective, appointed, NYC
5th  - Italian forces are the first to use airships for military purposes, using them for reconnaissance behind Turkish lines.
7th- Roald Amundsen announces discovery of the South Pole
12th  - Girl Guides (Girl Scouts) forms in Savannah, by Juliette Gordon Low
14th- King Vittorio Emanuel III of Rome injured during assassination attempt
23rd - Dixie Cup invented

April 1912:
2nd-  Titanic undergoes sea trials under its own power
4th- Army fires on striking mine workers at Lena-gold fields Siberia
     - Chinese republic proclaimed in Tibet
6th-  Electric starter 1st appeared in cars
9th-  Titanic leaves Queenstown Ireland for NY
10th-  RMS Titanic sets sail for its 1st & last voyage
13th-  Royal Flying Corps forms (later RAF)
15th-  Titanic sinks at 2:27 AM off Newfoundland as band plays on
16th-  Harriet Quimby becomes 1st woman pilot to cross English Channel

18th-  The Cunard liner RMS Carpathia brings 705 survivors from the RMS Titanic to New York City.

May 1912:
31st- US marines land on Cuba
June 1912:
4th- Massachusetts passes 1st US minimum wage law
5th- US marines invade Cuba (3nd time)
7th-  US army tests 1st machine gun mounted on a plane

July 1912:
22nd- 5th Olympic games in Stockholm, Sweden closes

August 1912:
14th-  2,500 US marines invade Nicaragua; US remains until 1925
24th-  Territory of Alaska organizes
25th- The Kuomintang, the Chinese nationalist party, is founded.

September 1912:
15th- War between Turkey & Montenegro breaks out in Albania

October 1912:
8th-  1st Balkan War begins - Montenegro declares war on Turkey
14th-  Bull Moose Teddy Roosevelt shot while campaigning in Milwaukee
18th- Italo-Turkish war ends
19th- Tripoli (Libya) passes from Turkish to Italian control

November 1912:
5th- Arizona, Kansas & Wisconsin vote for female suffrage
     -Woodrow Wilson (D) defeats Theodore Roosevelt & Pres Taft (R)

December 1912:
3rd- Turkey, Serbia, Montenegro, Greece & Bulgaria sign weapons pact.
6th- China votes for universal human rights
16th- 1st US postage stamp picturing an airplane, 20 cent parcel post, issued
28th- The first municipally owned streetcars take to the streets in San Francisco, California
